Ingredients
Scale
French Toast Sticks
- 8 thick slices Texas toast or French bread
- 4 eggs
- 1 cup half and half
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons butter
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Optional
- Maple syrup (for serving)
Instructions
- Prepare the bread: Cut each slice of bread into 4 sticks and set them aside for dipping.
- Make the egg mixture: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, half and half, sugar, vanilla, and salt until well combined.
- Prepare the coating: In a separate bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon for the cinnamon sugar coating and set aside.
- Heat the skillet: Place a skillet over medium heat and add 1/2 tablespoon of butter, allowing it to melt and coat the pan evenly.
- Cook the sticks: Dip the bread sticks into the egg mixture, letting excess drip off, then place them carefully in the hot skillet. Cook 6-8 sticks at a time, giving them space to avoid overcrowding.
- Brown the sticks: Cook each side for about 1-2 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Coat in cinnamon sugar: Remove the sticks from the skillet and immediately roll each in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated. Place on a serving tray.
- Repeat cooking: Continue cooking all the bread sticks, adding more butter to the skillet as necessary.
- Serve: Serve warm with maple syrup if desired for dipping.
Notes
- Use thick slices like Texas toast or French bread for the best texture.
- Make sure to give the sticks enough space in the skillet for even cooking and browning.
- Roll the sticks immediately after cooking to let the cinnamon sugar stick well.
- If you want crispier sticks, cook a little longer but avoid burning.
- Maple syrup is optional but adds a delicious sweetness when served alongside.
