Description

These homemade French toast sticks are a delightful breakfast treat featuring thick Texas toast dipped in a rich egg mixture, cooked until golden, and coated in a sweet cinnamon sugar mixture. Perfectly soft inside with a crunchy coating, they are simple to make and great for dipping in maple syrup.

Ingredients

Scale

French Toast Sticks

  • 8 thick slices Texas toast or French bread
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup half and half
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter

Cinnamon Sugar Coating

  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Optional

  • Maple syrup (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the bread: Cut each slice of bread into 4 sticks and set them aside for dipping.
  2. Make the egg mixture: In a shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, half and half, sugar, vanilla, and salt until well combined.
  3. Prepare the coating: In a separate bowl, mix the sugar and cinnamon for the cinnamon sugar coating and set aside.
  4. Heat the skillet: Place a skillet over medium heat and add 1/2 tablespoon of butter, allowing it to melt and coat the pan evenly.
  5. Cook the sticks: Dip the bread sticks into the egg mixture, letting excess drip off, then place them carefully in the hot skillet. Cook 6-8 sticks at a time, giving them space to avoid overcrowding.
  6. Brown the sticks: Cook each side for about 1-2 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
  7. Coat in cinnamon sugar: Remove the sticks from the skillet and immediately roll each in the cinnamon sugar mixture until fully coated. Place on a serving tray.
  8. Repeat cooking: Continue cooking all the bread sticks, adding more butter to the skillet as necessary.
  9. Serve: Serve warm with maple syrup if desired for dipping.

Notes

  • Use thick slices like Texas toast or French bread for the best texture.
  • Make sure to give the sticks enough space in the skillet for even cooking and browning.
  • Roll the sticks immediately after cooking to let the cinnamon sugar stick well.
  • If you want crispier sticks, cook a little longer but avoid burning.
  • Maple syrup is optional but adds a delicious sweetness when served alongside.
