Ingredients
Scale
Sausage Gravy
- 1 pound ground breakfast sausage
- 1/3 cup flour
- 3 1/4 cups milk
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Egg Mixture
- 6 eggs
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1/4 cup diced red pepper
Other
- 1 16.3-ounce tube biscuits (8 count)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare: Preheat your oven to 350℉ and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
- Cook Sausage: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown and crumble the ground breakfast sausage until fully cooked.
- Make Gravy: Sprinkle the flour evenly over the cooked sausage, stirring constantly, and cook for 1 minute to remove the raw flour taste.
- Add Milk and Seasonings: Slowly add 3 1/4 cups of milk to the skillet, stirring constantly to combine and avoid lumps. Add black pepper, salt, and red pepper flakes if using. Continue cooking and stirring until the mixture comes to a boil and thickens, then remove from heat and set aside.
- Scramble Eggs: In a large microwave-safe bowl, whisk together 6 eggs, 1/4 cup milk, and diced red pepper. Pour the egg mixture into a hot skillet and scramble over medium heat until fully cooked.
- Prepare Biscuits: Open the tube of biscuits and cut each biscuit into 8 pieces. Arrange the biscuit pieces evenly on the bottom of the greased baking dish.
- Assemble Casserole: Layer the cooked scrambled eggs over the biscuit pieces. Pour the sausage gravy evenly on top of the eggs. Then sprinkle 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the gravy.
- Bake Covered: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes.
- Bake Uncovered: Remove the foil and bake an additional 20 minutes to brown the top and ensure the biscuits are cooked through.
Notes
- Using store-bought biscuit dough makes this casserole quick and easy to assemble.
- For extra flavor, try adding cooked onions or mushrooms to the sausage gravy.
- You can substitute cheddar cheese with your favorite cheese such as Monterey Jack or pepper jack for a spicy kick.
- This casserole can be prepared the night before; assemble and refrigerate uncovered overnight, then bake in the morning.
- If you prefer spicier dishes, increase the red pepper flakes or add hot sauce to the gravy.
